CLASS 4-23-09

Dr. Pierce Showed us a completed Web Quest created by Adrienne Riggi. We have to have a basic theme or question for our web quest in order to create it. Meredith Byrd and I have decided to do a web quest on strange things in the world. We are asking whether they are fact or fiction. We have broken this down into four categories; Bigfoot, Crop Circles, UFOs, and Ghosts.

The ISTE standards that this assignment covered are 1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity and standard 3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning.

Class 4-21-09

In class today, we corrected mistakes and missunderstandings we had on our presentations. Dr. Pierce instructed us on our future Web Quests. We are assigned to have a topic picked out by the beginning of our next class meeting.

We attatched a Jeopardy and Who Wants to Win a Million to our sites.
The ISTE standard that this assignment covered are ISTE standard 3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning.

Dr. Pierce showed us a Rubric creator on the Rubistar homepage.
Dr. Pierce showed us that we could create a new page with our Podcast in the page.

Class 4-2-09

Dr. Pierce went over some trends in social networking. The last class we talked about the action research project. We looked at Google sites, add/edit page. Today, we are going to goof around with Google sites again, Page option, Types Dashboard. Last time we created a webpage. We are working to organize our information. We added gadgets to our web sites. We added a new calendar to our google docs.
Today we created a dashboard page in our google site. We also created an online calendar.

Class 3-31-09

Today we looked at the theory behind multi modal learning. We need to be aware of theoretical framework for mml. Dr. Pierce told us that we have to conduct an experiment to know what actual research is. 1 Multimedia Principle - Retention is improved through words, 2 Multimedia Principle – Students learn better when they see words associated with pictures, Coherence Principle – when extraneous words pictures and sounds are excluded, Modality – learn better from narration and animation than on-screen text, Redundancy – this interferes with learning, Individual Differences Principle – Design is a huge issue in the classroom, there are differences between high special learners and low special learners, Direct Manipulation Principle – learning that engages multimodal designs.

We looked at how to manage a PowerPoint presentation. This correlates with the activity we did last Thursday with the Jeopardy PowerPoint we adapted for our own functional use. We also worked to set up our own virtual classroom in Google Sites. My site is called “Roy Jenree’s Site”. Then, in the web page we created, we put the word document on Presentations that Dr. Pierce gave us into it. Afterwards we added attachments to the page we created in our website.

The standard that this lesson covered is ISTE standard 3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning.

Jeopardy

Class 3-26-09

In today’s class we learned how to manipulate existing presentations. We used a jeopardy-designed powerpoint and adjusted it to our own means. We adapted this powerpoint.

The ISTE Standards that this assignment covers are, standard 1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity and standard 3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning.

Class 3-24-09

At the beginning of class, we identified the pictures of everyone that were taken the week of midterm. Dr. Pierce had told us the pictures of the class were going to be our midterm final, but we hadn’t had a chance to really go over it. So we just played around with it today.

The world has not caught up with the newest version of office PowerPoint. This makes it difficult to open up files made on old or newer versions. PowerPoint has several formats; the file type used depends on your audience.

In class we took 2-3 minutes to search for a presentation we could use in our classes for the grade level we are striving to teach. I found one on vertebrates and invertebrates.

Today’s activities included; on the web (ftp) .ppt, On the web (ftp) .pps, On the web (ftp) .htm, On the web (ftp) .pdf, On the web .pdf Google, Embedded in blog, Google Pres on web, My pres. C:\desktop. The basic idea is that the “beast” as Dr. Pierce referred to it, can be saved in a variety of formats.

We can save things in Acrobat reader, Web Browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox…), Powerpoint, and PowerPoint viewer. Acrobat is really no longer needed to make .pdf files.

Most popular to least popular programs, in my mind are such;
1. Web Browser
2. Powerpoint
3. Powerpoint Viewer
4. Acrobat

After we saved the free online PowerPoint to our computers, we uploaded them to our Google Docs. Then we embedded it to embed it to our post.
Here is also a link to the free PowerPoint Presentation in my Google documents.

The standard that this lesson covered is ISTE standard 3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning.

Class 2-26-09

Today in class we listened to the lesson plans created by our peers. We also heard a lecture on the next lesson plan we will do, which is a podcast lesson plan where we will be recording our voice for a future lesson. We have to have a script written by Tuesday on the topic we will do in our podcast.

Class 2-19-09

In class today we looked at various types of charts that enable a viewer to interpret certain types of data. We looked at the West Virginia profile on this link.

In class we also created a graph graphic using the IEP percentages of four different states. Mine were the following,
WV 17.2
TX 10.2
WY 16.4
CA 10.7
We then went to crappygraphics.com and played with crappy graphics. And then we made a crappy graphic. You can view it at this link.

Crappy Graphic

Here is my crappy graphic... enjoy. The standard for this assignment is ISTE standard which this activity covers is standard 3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning.

Graph Graphic

Here is a link to my Graph Graphic from today's class. We used the KIDZONE website again to create the necessary graph for this assignment. The ISTE standard which this activity covers is standard 3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning.

Class 2-17-09

Today we are learning about chain links in our blog posts. They are useful for not having a large URL site in our blog. We can make our blog post title a link to our work.
Today we are creating a document that contains a graph that can be published on the web. We are using this website.
We looked at the state report card. Then we made a graph based on this data.

INTASC Principles

INTASC Principles

Class 2-12-09

In class, we learned how to use and create graphics on our blog page. Graphics are used in instruction to make a point. Graphs have points on them that are open for interpretation. Being able to make charts, diagrams, and other things are a very handy tool to use in the classroom.
We were also shown a link to a class rubric to show us the exceptional requirements for the class. We were told that we have to know what fits into the 21st century framework in the classroom.

Graphic

The INTASC standard that this activity covered would be Principle 3:Learning styles/diversity. I copied a picture out of google, saved it to pictures, then put it through paint to put the funny graffitti on it.

Recap of Web Trends From Previous Class

Web trends
e-mail is dead
print is dead
virtual reality is coming on

This class is about exploring different types of trends used in the classroom.

Dale's Cone

1. According to the text, Dale’s Cone of Experience is in actuality a visual metaphor about audio-visual materials and how learning is assessed through them.

2. The data in Dale’s cone is bogus. The facts don’t line up.

3. According to the text, one size or percentage of a certain area does not fit all learners. I don’t think Dale’s Cone is very valid.

Class 2-10-09

Today we created an FTP link to our test document page. We also listened to a lecture on the history and future of the internet.

Class on 2-3-09

During class we created a new intel visual ranking tool. To get into the ranking exercise I created you have to go to http://www.intel.com/education/tools/index.htm and sign in under rjenree. The various ids are Team A, Team B, Team C, and Team D. The passwords are the same as the Team names. Remember that passwords are case sensitive so the first letter in Team should be capitalized and there should be a space between Team and the letter corresponding to the Team. The Letter of the Team should also be capitalized in order to sign in correctly. The exercise is to help Darwin identify the food chain for the various animals listed.

Intel Ranking Tool

Today we are working with a new intel ranking tool. These are different kinds of tools. By the end of this class, we will be able to create our own intel ranking assignments.
